Watercolor Class Exercise

Marzieh prepared a simple yet interesting and beneficial exercise in order to motivate you to combine a couple of techniques from her watercolor class.

Please follow the below instructions:

1. Tape your paper down to a table or a board. So it does not warp when your paper gets dry at the end of the project.
2. Prepare 3-4 different colours/shades in your palette. (I was inspired by the Fall leaves colours for this project.) Use a lot of water in order to decrease the pigmentation of your paint. (We need very watery colours for this stage.)
3. Wet your paper using a wide flat brush or a spray.
4. Pick a big round brush, choose a colour from your palette and rub the paint on the paper. As the paper is wet the paint starts to bleed, mix and spread out. (wet on wet technique)
5. Cover your paper completely with paint. Use all the colours and shades that you have mixed in your palette.
6. Before the paint gets dry on the paper, use some salt on the spots that you like.

Children like to explore themselves, find interesting angles and extra-ordinary ways of thinking. At Atelier they train their art muscles to represent reality as they know it. Look at these serious self-
portraits. Aren't they great?

Plein Air 2017 with Pilar Mehlis

Summer Camp in July was really fun! We had a wonderful Plein Air Exhibition with parents and friends of the students. Hoping next year you can join us.
They went all over Vancouver: PNE, Science World, and a Dude Chilling Park in Mount Pleasant. They even get to draw a cow, which they found in the PNE Gardens. The cow gladly modeled for them, because it was a sculpture.

Light and Shadow Rendering Steps

Here are simplified steps for light and shadow rendering of any object (based on plaster ear model):

This is a classical academic approach to drawing a full render of a form. Your drawing develops from big shapes to small details, from simple analysis to more difficult. Overall this process involves very little erasing, only at the very beginning and at the end. If you able to gradually follow these steps, your work will progress steady but firmly.

1. Start by setting up your object with the best light possible. Make sure you have only one light source shining on the object.
2. Focus on proportions, angle and eye level. Make a light line drawing of the object.
3. Break it into two zones - light and shadow. Hatch all shadow areas lightly with parallel hatches. All areas should be of the same tone. Include all details. Leave lights white paper.
4. Notice maximum of three areas with the strongest contrast. Keep only three of them the darkest. Add core shadow contrast on all shapes.
5. Go ahead and compare all lights together. You may leave only maximum of three areas white, all the rest must to be hatched over with comparable light tones. As you go form mid-tones.
6. Go back to shadows and make them darker than any lights. Make sure to model the form as you go, noticing lighter and darker areas. All shapes should feel complete and connected properly. Make sure your reflected lights are not lighter then lights.
7. Overview and finish your drawing. Add details, connect outstanding shapes.

Example above is a part of program for Intro to Portraiture Class on Tuesdays 6-8pm, starting in October.
